Abstract |
Objectives:The aim of this study was to test reliability and validity of the Korean version of the Global Assessment of Functioning
Scale (K-GAF). Methods:We recruited 70 patients with non-psychotic mental disorders. The GAF ratings were done in the original way which was
described in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th edition (GAF-total, GAFT) and 2 other subscales;GAFsymptom
(GAFSYM), GAF-dysfunction (GAFDIS). To evaluate the concurrent validity, the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale
(HDRS), the Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAM-A), the Clinical Global Impression (CGI), the Social Adjustment Scale-Self-Report
(SAS-SR), the Sheehan Disability Scale (SDS) were used. Results:The inter-rater reliability of the K-GAF was satisfactory in GAFT (r=0.89), GAFSYM (r=0.81), GAFDIS (r=0.90).
K-GAF held a significant concurrent validity in the relation to the HDRS, the HAM-A and the CGI. K-GAF revealed a high correlation
with the total score and three subscales of the SDS, and with the total score and three subscales of the SAS-SR, but not with
subscales of relatives, spouse and rear. Conclusion:These findings prove that the K-GAF is a reliable and valid instrument to assess overall functioning of patients with
non-psychotic mental disorders, and can be widely and extensively used in clinical practice and researches. (Korean J Schizophr
