Stigma of Mental Disorders and Consequent Discrimination
Norman Sartorius, MD1 and Heather Stuart, MD2
Abstract
The stigma and discrimination directed to people with mental illnesses poses the single greatest barrier to the development of mental health programs. This paper will provide an overview of what we know about the stigma of mental disorders and consequent discrimination, and will offer suggestions for activities that can be undertaken to diminish its effects. As well as drawing on the scientific literature dealing with this topic, this paper will offer personal insights gained from over ten years of working with the World Psychiatric Association Global Program to Fight Stigma and Discrimination Because of Mental Disorders, now known as the Open-the-Doors Anti-stigma Network.
