Abstract |
Objectives:The purpose of this study is to survey sexual life and the view of marriage in the unmarried outpatients with schizophrenia
and to compare with the general normal population. Methods:Two hundreds and thirty outpatients with unmarried schizophrenic patients and 198 unmarried normal controls were
participated in this study. The survey questionnaire included 17 items on the sexual behaviors and participants’ views on marriage. Results:Patients had the first sexual intercourse at older age, more frequent sexual harassment or sexual assaults, less frequent
sexual intercourse and masturbation than normal control. About half of male patients resolved their sexual desire by masturbation
but about 70% of female patients did by doing something to forget the sexual desire. About 70% of patients wished to be married
but not to psychiatric patients. The most frequent reason not to intend to marry psychiatric patients is financial difficulty in the
male and worry for next generation in the female patients. In the domestic marriage, most patients responded to tell the truth about
mental illness voluntarily to the partner. But as for the international marriage, most patients responded that they would give minimum
information if asked. Conclusion:The sexual behavior and the view of marriage is different between schizophrenic patients and normal controls and
also different between male and female within patients. (Korean J Schizophr Res 2009;12:24-32) |
